How to Get Rid of Fleas

We love our pets like family, which is why it’s so heartbreaking to see them in discomfort.

Of course, that heartbreak comes tenfold when the rest of your family is also suffering, which is what happens when your pet brings pests into your home. Wondering how to get rid of fleas? Read on for some solid steps to free yourself from these little bloodsuckers….

It’s important to note, when you’re wondering how to get rid of fleas in your house, that the insects you see account for only a fraction of the actual population – and they have a fast-tracked breeding cycle that you’ll need to nip in the bud.  Here’s how to get rid of fleas:

Step 1: Kill the biters

Your pet’s comfort (not to mention that of the human members of your household) is a priority. A vet can provide you with medication, oral and/or topical, that can eradicate adult fleas quite soundly. Some flea sufferers reported the bugs were dead within hours after dosing their pets.

Step 2: Wipe out the next generation

(Step 2 can be done in tandem with step 1) Once your household is free of biters, ensuring eradication of the eggs, larvae and pupae is essential. Although washing all the dog bedding in hot water – with a hot dryer cycle, as well – can work, the best idea is to trash it all in favor of new things. Leave the dog or cat bed on the shopping list for a few days, too, to prevent re-infestation in case you miss any. Sweep and mop floors, vacuum all carpets and any furniture – particularly items that your pet is allowed to access.

Hot Tip:  Don’t bring home upholstered furniture you pick up off the street.  It could have fleas or bedbugs in it.

Step 3: Treat these areas

When it comes to getting rid of fleas, you’ll likely want chemical help in a few places. Foggers may not be an option in your apartment, but sprays can help. Treat the areas where your pets spend their time and definitely spray the carpets, as well. Many on the market will help control other pests, as well.

Step 4: Prevention, prevention, prevention!

This is key. Invest in a product that keeps infestation from happening. These treatments break the flea reproduction cycle, which means that even if your dog carries fleas in from outside, they’ll never get the chance to make their home inside yours.

We’ll be cheering you on as you wage war on fleas. It’s important to win!
